기하학(幾何學, geometry)은 ‘도형에 관한 학문’이다. 그리스어로 ‘geo-’는 대지, ‘-metry’는 계측을 뜻하는 말에서 생겨났다. 징조, 기미, 희미한, 대략 등 여러 뜻을 지닌 ‘기(幾)’와 결합된 ‘기하(幾何)’는 “어느 정도”라는 뜻으로, 계측과 관련된 낱말이다.
